When should a bar chart be used?

A bar chart should be used when comparing values across categories.
It works best for showing differences between groups like region, product, or department.
It is ideal when categories are discrete and not time-based trends.
In one project, I used a bar chart to compare sales across 10 regions.
It clearly showed top and bottom performers.
Bar charts also work well when category names are long.
They provide better readability than column charts in such cases.
I use them when the goal is quick comparison and ranking.
